During our holidays in Sicily last summer we met a refugee. We gave him some money, from which he could buy food for one, maybe two days. A very short-term solution. But like millions of others living amid war and famine, this man needs much more than food for some days. This man comes from war, chaos and has very probably suffered the loss of loved ones. Despite the fact that more than half of the people living in war areas are exposed to multiple severe traumatic events, only one in four have access to psychological help.
Niels, wearing his new hat, was studying the basics of social entrepreneurship at that moment. Aishah is a master student in clinical neuropsychology. This is how we got our idea. Originally a hat offers physical protection: a straw hat offers protection against the harmful effects of the sun, a beanie offers warmth against the cold and so on. But what if something as simple as a hat could, besides offering physical protection, also offer mental protection? One hat serving two functions by use of the one for one principle: for each hat sold, one person in a crisis area is provided with psychological help.
With hatsup. we strive to sell awesome hats throughout the year. For every hat sold, hatsup. puts a smile on the face of the customer and a smile on the face of one person in mental distress. One hat, two smiles.
